CMO++ or a full-time CMO? A simple way to decide
A full-time CMO is a bet on a person. CMO++ is a bet on a system. Here is how founders should choose between them.

The question behind the question
When a founder asks me whether to hire a CMO, they are rarely asking about a title. They are asking: who is going to own growth so I can stop owning it?
There are two ways to answer that. One is a full-time hire. The other is CMO++.
Three questions that decide it
1. Do you know what you need the CMO to do?
If you can write the first four quarters of that person's mandate, hire full-time. If you cannot — and most companies before Series B cannot — you will hire against a guess and correct it eighteen months later at great cost. CMO++ lets you find the mandate by running it.
2. Do you already have a team to execute?
A CMO without a team becomes a very expensive individual contributor. If you have fewer than four marketers, a single senior hire will spend the first year doing work below their level. CMO++ arrives with the execution layer attached.
3. How much does a wrong year cost you?
A senior marketing hire takes three to six months to find, three months to ramp, and a year to evaluate. That is your runway. CMO++ starts inside a fortnight, and if the fit is wrong, you change direction in a quarter, not a year.
What each one is genuinely better at
Full-time CMO wins when: the category is settled, the team is 8+, the mandate is clear, and the role needs deep internal political capital.
CMO++ wins when: speed matters, the mandate is still forming, the team is lean, or you need senior judgement without a senior headcount.
The part most people miss
These are not rivals. In our best engagements, CMO++ builds the function and then hires the full-time CMO into a machine that already works — with positioning defined, a rhythm running, and numbers on the board. That person succeeds faster because they inherit clarity instead of a blank page.
CMO++ FAQs
Is CMO++ cheaper than a full-time CMO?
Materially, yes — and the comparison is not like-for-like, because a CMO++ engagement includes execution that a single hire would not.
Can CMO++ hire our full-time CMO for us?
Yes. Writing the role, defining the scorecard, and evaluating candidates is part of how most engagements end well.
Does CMO++ work with an existing marketing team?
Almost always. We lead the team you have, add capacity only where there is a real gap, and leave the team stronger than we found it.
How fast does a CMO++ engagement start?
Typically within two weeks, because we are not recruiting — we are deploying.
